Pattern: Sandpiper Swimsuit

Company: Helen's Closet

I weigh about a hundred pounds soaking wet. And it is tough to know that without a swimsuit to get wet in. As you can imagine, when you are tiny and tall it is impossible to find a swimsuit anywhere. I’m too small for ladies' sizes and, even though it might fit, I have no interest in wearing a child-sized My Little Pony tankini into the pool. This is how I ended up sewing my own bathing suit.

I have a lot to say about this pattern. It was my first time working with knit fabric, and honestly I don’t know why I let it intimidate me for so long! As long as you have good control of your fabric tension you won’t have any issues. As for sandpiper itself, it became a fast favourite after a few adjustments.

Likes:

  • The shape and coverage

  • The option for high and low waisted bottoms

  • The simplicity of the assembly process

Things I changed:

  • I opted not to add any elastic to the neckline or arm holes because I didn’t like the feel

  • I used power mesh as my lining but in the future I’d use swim lining (or size up because the mesh doesn’t stretch as much as other swim knits do)

  • I accidentally cut the leg holes one size up from the rest of my pattern… so next time I make these I have to size back down.

Overall, I’m such a fan and excited to finally have a swimsuit I like and that fits me properly!!
