Role: Costume Designer

First musical back after COVID, I was tracked down by my drama teacher and asked to use my sewing skills to design and create costumes. This involved creating and adhering to budgets, designing an overall look and feel for the production as a whole, and sourcing or creating individual costumes for each character. I am most proud of the creation of a four-legged pair of pants articulated by 3D printed joints for the character Squidward.

This opportunity was the pinnacle of my intersection between technology and creativity. I leaned on my sewing knowledge to create the pattern and sew the four-legged-pants for the character Squidward. I then used my CAD and 3D printing skills to create the second set of legs to be housed in the pants. The legs had to hold up under the pressure of active choreography, while navigating the stairs built into the set (something that the original Broadway costume designer, David Zinn, said he had issues with when I emailed him with questions.) Over 8 months I iterated and adapted as I managed the constraints of the project. Working to make something sturdy, affordable, and functional within the timeline proved to be challenging. I learned how to collaborate with the actor to illicit feedback. I also learned what it is like to work under pressure and how to seek support. The show must go on, as they say, and as I had to deliver on time. It was rewarding to watch my creation come to life and dance from backstage.
